New: Pay Rent With Any Credit Card through BILT Rewards to Earn Points

pay rent with any credit card, earn bilt points

BILT Rewards has just expanded its rent payment options, now allowing users to pay their rent with any credit card while still earning BILT points. This update gives renters more flexibility and additional opportunities to maximize their credit card rewards.

What’s New With BILT Rent Payments

Previously, earning points on rent payments without fees was exclusive to BILT Mastercard holders. Now, BILT has opened up its platform to all credit cards, enabling renters to earn 1x BILT point per dollar spent on rent payments, regardless of which card they use. But there is a catch, so read on.

How to Earn BILT Points on Rent

The process is straightforward:

  • Pay your rent through the BILT app using any credit card
  • Earn 1x BILT point per dollar on your rent payment
  • Your credit card will also earn its standard rewards on the transaction

There is, however, a 3% transaction fee applied when using non-BILT cards, which is standard for credit card rent payments across most platforms.

When Does Using a Card for Rent Make Sense?

Despite the 3% fee, there are several scenarios where paying rent with a non-BILT card could be beneficial:

Meeting Welcome Bonus SPENDING Requirements

If you’re working toward a sign-up bonus on a new credit card, using it to pay rent can help you reach the minimum spending threshold much faster. Welcome bonuses offer values far above the 3% fee.

Using cards that earn a high rate on any transaction

If you are using a card that earns a flat 2x or more (like Capital One Venture or Bank of America Premium Rewards), the combined rewards on your spend and the BILT points have a value beyond the 3% fee.

Reaching status tiers through spending requirements

Large rent payments can help you reach spending thresholds for elite status or exclusive benefits with hotel chains, airlines, or credit card loyalty programs. These elite benefits might outweigh the 3% fee for frequent travelers or those close to qualifying for the next tier.

Example #1: New card bonus

A new card requires $6,000 spend within 3 months to earn 100,000 points (approx $1,800). Use the new card to pay $1,500/mo rent through BILT for 3 months ($4,500).

3% fee = $45/mo x 3 months = $135

Earn 75% of the sign-up bonus (approx $1350), and 4500 points (approx $81) from BILT = $1431

Net gain = $1,296

Example #2: High-rate earner

Use the Capital One Venture card to earn 2x, and pay through BILT to earn 1x for $1,500/mo rent.

3% fee = $45

Earn 3000 miles (approx $48) from Capital One, and 1500 points (approx $27) from BILT = $75

Net gain = $30

About BILT Rewards

For those unfamiliar, BILT Rewards is a program originally designed for renters. The BILT Rewards app allows you to pay rent to almost any landlord while earning valuable points.

BILT points can be transferred to various travel partners, including Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, Hyatt, and IHG, typically at a 1:1 ratio. Points can also be redeemed in other ways, but transfers are generally the best value.

The BILT Mastercard itself remains the only credit card that allows fee-free rent payments while earning BILT rewards, but this new option expands possibilities for strategic credit card use cases.

Paying Rent with a Credit Card: The Bottom Line

Most people may still find the BILT Mastercard to be the best option for earning valuable BILT rewards, as it comes with no annual fee while also earning 3x on Dining and 2x on Travel.

However, the ability to pay rent with any credit card through BILT opens up new opportunities for renters to maximize their rewards strategy. While the 3% fee means this won’t be the right choice for everyone all the time, it’s a welcome addition to the rewards toolkit as yet another way to get the most value from standard expenses.
