Amex Gold Card Refresh 2024: White Gold, New Statement Credits

American Express has just launched a major refresh of their popular Gold Card for 2024, featuring some new credits and retailers (it’s lost some too). The updated card is available now. If you’re a current cardholder or thinking about getting one, here’s what you need to know about what’s changed and what hasn’t so you can make the most of this refresh.
Limited Edition: New White Gold
First up, there’s a new limited edition White Gold design, which Amex has stated will be available while supplies last. This new Amex White Gold card color adds to the existing lineup of Classic Gold and Rose Gold. Not only can new card sign-ups request this White Gold design, but many existing cardholders have also been requesting it. But it’s not just about looks—there are some new perks too.
Amex Gold Refresh: What’s Changed?
New Statement Credits
- New $100 Resy Credit: This new benefit gives you $50 semi-annual to use at Resy restaurants. You don’t need to actually book a reservation through Resy; simply use your card at a Resy participating restaurant.
- New $84 Dunkin’ Credit: Get $7 a month at Dunkin’. That’s a free coffee (or two) each month if you have a Dunkin’ in your area.
- Updated $120 Dining Credit: A small but significant update for some. Shake Shack is out, and Five Guys is in. You’ll also still have Grubhub, Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, and Wine.com to use toward the credit.
Increased Annual Fee
Of course, with added benefits comes a new asking price. The annual fee has gone up to $325 (from $250). This new fee applies to any new card applications and will apply to existing cardholder renewals beginning October 1, 2024.
Amex Gold Card: What hasn’t changed?
Membership Rewards Points Earning
- 4x Points at Restaurants: Up to $50,000 in global restaurant purchases annually.
- 4x Points on Groceries: Up to $25,000 at U.S. supermarkets annually.
- 3x Points on Flights: Book directly with the airline (or through amextravel.com).
Existing Statement Credits
$120 in Uber Cash: Get $10 per month deposited into your Uber account. The credits can be used for Uber rideshare or Uber Eats. Remember to use this credit each month; it does not rollover.
Is the American Express Gold Card Still a Keeper?
The American Express® Gold Card has always been one of my favorite credit cards because of the earning potential in high-spend categories of Groceries and Restaurants, and the transferrable value of Membership Rewards. Even with the previously hefty annual fee of $250, if you were able to naturally use the Dining and Uber credits totaling $240, the card would have an effective annual fee of $10. You’d break-even after spending just $250 on grocery or restaurant purchases each year.
With the new Gold Card refresh, Amex has added $184 in credits along with the $75 annual fee increase. With the same mindset as the previous version, if you were able to naturally use all these credits, you should be able to easily break-even. However, the new Dunkin’ and Resy credits are harder to use. Believe it or not, some parts of the U.S. are a Dunkin’ desert. And many of the Resy restaurants are only available in urban centers. If you can’t use these new credits, but can use the other credits, the effective annual fee would be $85. This changes the math—a lot. You’d need to spend $2,125 on groceries and restaurants each year just to break-even.
So, is the American Express Gold Card a keeper? The credits keep rolling in, but as I’ve laid out here, the value of the card is now more about your ability and willingness to use the monthly and semi-annual credits. When considering any credit cards with coupon books (i.e. statement credits), you’ll first need to think about how you’ll use the credits and any other benefits the card may have. If they align with your lifestyle, the elevated earning categories on purchases can still be rewarding. If not, you should consider a different credit card setup.
There are plenty of cards with lower or no annual fees that feature elevated rates on common spending categories to maximize points or cash back, without the hassle of credits.
